The Last Photograph — Snyder’s long-gestating passion project and his most intimate film to date — crashes the Toronto lineup at the last minute.
Zack Snyder is going to Toronto — without a cape, a cowl, or a single alien in sight. The director’s long-gestating passion project, The Last Photograph, was added to the 51st Toronto International Film Festival lineup at the last minute, with a world premiere set for September 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the John Bassett Theatre, TIFF’s new screening venue at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
The announcement caught the industry off guard. TIFF had already released its full 2026 roster in August, making the late addition — confirmed directly by the festival with a personal message from Snyder himself on social media — a genuine surprise.
The film follows a former DEA agent who travels deep into the South American jungle on a mission of revenge, where dangerous terrain and inner demons become increasingly difficult to separate. Stuart Martin, known for Army of Thieves, and Fra Fee, who appeared in Hawkeye, lead the cast alongside Jackie Kay, Costanza Andrade, Carolina Henao, and Marlon Moreno. Snyder directed from a screenplay co-written with his longtime collaborator Kurt Johnstad.
The Last Photograph represents a striking departure for a filmmaker best known for the sweeping visual spectacle of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and the four-hour Snyder Cut of Justice League. The film is smaller in scale and more intimate in tone — described by those who have seen early footage as a character-driven action thriller with genuine emotional stakes rather than a blockbuster event.
Snyder first attempted to develop the project more than a decade ago, with early reports surfacing as far back as 2016. Various cast and financing configurations came and went over the years, finally coming together in 2025 with a streamlined version of the story. It is Snyder’s first film since completing his Rebel Moon two-parter for Netflix.
Notably, the film arrives at TIFF without a distributor. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed it will pursue a buyer at TIFF: The Market, the festival’s inaugural official content market. With its out-of-the-ordinary pedigree and TIFF’s significant acquisitions history, the film is expected to attract serious interest from streamers and speciality distributors. TIFF 2026 runs September 10–20 in downtown Toronto.
